Vanga Blue Forest
Learn more about this project
Vanga Blue Forest has enabled the protection of 460 hectares of mangroves and community development projects supporting the livelihoods of nearly 9,000 people in three villages: Vanga, Jimbo, and Kiwegu.
Following the recognition of the success of Mikoko Pamoja has had over the years in environmental protection and community development through conserving their mangroves, the Vanga community came together to protect their forest in the same way.
We launched Vanga Blue Forest in 2019 and we support the Vanga team to fund their work through the sale of carbon credits. The funds go towards protecting the precious mangrove forests and providing social and economic benefits to the community such as school materials and village infrastructure.
We are delighted to see that the successes of Mikoko Pamoja are being recognised both internationally and locally and that it is influential in encouraging others to protect their mangrove forests.
Vanga Blue Forest has been a huge expansion for us in terms of area and funding. The site is three times the size of the current Mikoko Pamoja site.
We are incredibly grateful to have been awarded support from the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, United Nations Environment Programme, and Global Environment Facility for the costs of establishing the site. The expansion of our sales of carbon credits contributes to the ongoing funding of this project.
